BUSINESS FUNDAMENTALS - BIFS 101

Course Description

This foundation-level course provides an introduction to core areas of business, including business systems, international trade, organizational structures, management principles, marketing, finance, and risk management. Emphasis is placed on the role of ethics, technology, and globalization in the business environment. Students will gain practical exposure through the use of the Internet and local and international case studies, encouraging them to explore real-world business issues from both a Bahamian and global perspective.

 

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the foundational concepts and functions of business.

  • Explore various forms of business ownership and organizational structures.

  • Examine the global and domestic economic challenges impacting businesses.

  • Analyze ethical and social responsibilities in business.

  • Explore entrepreneurial opportunities and strategies for success.

  • Identify key roles in business operations, including management, marketing, finance, and human resources.

  • Gain familiarity with business technologies and internet-based tools.

 

  

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of major business disciplines and their interrelationships.

  • Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of different business ownership types (e.g., sole proprietorships, partnerships, corporations, franchises).

  • Identify and describe potential career paths within the field of business.

  • Apply business principles to Bahamian business scenarios and personal decision-making.

  • Analyze and interpret business data using technology to communicate findings effectively.

  • Conduct preliminary business research and deliver oral or written presentations.
