G 12 Financial Services

Certificate Program Synopsis 2023


The G12 Financial Services Certificate Program was established, in 2008, by the Bahamas Institute of Financial Services (BIFS), with the support of the Financial Services Sector, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Finance. It is geared towards secondary/high school seniors, particularly those about to enter their final year of school (Age 15+).

 

While the program will focus on students in Grade 11, it will also accept students in Grade 12 who do not have the usual competing interests and commit to the full course of the certification program.

 

Days: Tuesday, Thursday

Time: 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM each day

 

Schedule 

M1 & M2 are for the 12 week period end-September to December
M3 & M4 are for the 12 week period end-January to April

 

Delivery Format:
Face to Face (in-person classes). Some course materials, assignments, and gradings are in an online (digital) classroom format.

Economic Concepts and Application

  • Fundamental principles and concepts of Economics

  • Application of economic tools to access domestic and global economic problems and opportunities.

  • Economics and the financial services sector of The Bahamas

  • Foster students’ ability to examine structures and functions of economic systems

  • Foster students’ understanding of government and public sector roles

  • Fiscal and monetary policy and strategies.

  • Function and effect of financial services sector on Bahamian economy.

  • Cryptocurrencies, central-bank-digital-currencies, and stable coins within the local and global economy


Financial Calculations and Computer Skills Foundation

  • Mathematical, problem solving, and analysis -- use and concepts in financial services.

  • Accounting use, concepts, and calculations.

  • Finance use, concepts, and calculations.

  • Statistics use, concepts, and calculations.

  • Approaches to fundamental mathematical skills (e.g., numerical systems and number types; addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, indices, and other functions; algebra and problem-solving mechanisms).

  • Technologies and related skills for computation, analysis, and financial services delivery and support.


Financial Services Institutions and Industry – Introduction

  • Financial systems underpinnings and operations.

  • Importance of financial institutions locally and globally.

  • Financial Institutions and the Bahamian Economy and macro-economy.

  • Careers in financial services and leveraging financial services skills in other economic sectors.

  • Financial institution types, private and government-owned financial institution differences, regulatory institutions and financial regulations, and regional and international financial institutions.

  • Financial literacy and entrepreneurship, digital banking

Legal, Ethical, Governance, and Management Primer

  • Legal environment and impact on financial services.

  • Importance of ethical and management basics.

  • Governance, risk, and compliance management within financial services.

  • Client services and relationship management.

  • Business ethics theories and exploring philosophical approaches to decision making.

  • Common and practical ethical engagements and encounters in work environments.

  • Management roles and functions within financial services institutions.

  • Employer-Employee management, relationship, responsibilities, and rights.
