Course Description:

This foundational course is designed to introduce students to essential computer concepts and digital tools. Emphasis is placed on developing digital literacy through hands-on experience with computer hardware, software applications, internet usage, and basic cybersecurity principles. The course prepares learners to effectively use technology in academic, professional, and everyday settings.

 

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the historical development and types of computers.

  • Identify key hardware and software components.

  • Use common operating systems and navigate a desktop interface.

  • Demonstrate basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Access and evaluate information using internet tools and web browsers.

  • Communicate digitally using email, Zoom, and messaging tools.

  • Apply cybersecurity best practices for safe and responsible technology use.

 

Course Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the evolution of computing technology and identify different forms of computers.

  • Differentiate between hardware and software, and explain the function of input/output devices.

  • Perform basic computer operations, file management, and use of cloud storage.

  • Create, format, and share documents using Microsoft Word.

  • Develop and manage basic spreadsheets and visual data using Microsoft Excel.

  • Build simple presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint.

  • Navigate the internet safely and conduct basic research.

  • Use digital communication platforms effectively.

  • Recognize and avoid online threats while maintaining digital security.

  • A computer or laptop with Windows operating system

  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • USB flash drive or external storage (optional)

  • Notebook and pen/pencil for notes

  • File management basics: creating, saving, organizing files

  • Introduction to cloud storage

 

3. Microsoft Word

  • Introduction to word processing

  • Creating and editing documents

  • Formatting text: fonts, sizes, colors

  • Using templates and styles

  • Saving, printing, and sharing documents

 

4. Microsoft Excel

  • Overview of spreadsheets

  • Interface: cells, rows, columns

  • Basic data entry and formatting

  • Introduction to formulas and functions

  • Creating simple charts and graphs

 

5. Microsoft PowerPoint

  • Introduction to presentation tools

  • Creating basic slides

  • Using themes, templates, and multimedia

  • Basic presentation techniques

 

6. Internet Basics

  • Using web browsers and search engines

  • Navigating websites and hyperlinks

  • Conducting basic online research

  • Evaluating credibility of online sources

 

7. Digital Communication

  • Email setup, sending, and management

  • Introduction to Zoom and instant messaging

  • Digital etiquette and communication tools

 

8. Cybersecurity Fundamentals

  • Importance of online privacy and security

  • Recognizing threats: viruses, phishing, malware

  • Safe browsing practices

  • Creating and managing strong passwords
